“Alumni”, what does it mean?

A search through the internet reveals the various forms of the word:

Alumnus/Alumna/Alumnae/Alumni and another closely associated phrase, “Alma mater”. A phone call to one of our resident Latin experts tells us that “Alma mater” means “nurturing mother” or “foster mother”.  “Alma mater” is often used by a student or graduate in reference to their university, where they received the milk of wisdom.  Alumni, then, are those sons and daughters who were nurtured by this Alma mater.  See Alumni Highlights for news about the alumni of ITI and how they are serving the Church and Society.If you are an alumnus, we want to hear how you are doing!  Please send us your information here.
